I think the final product, the essay is acceptable. I did take a firm position and supported it with several points using examples. However, I lacked in analyzing each point in depth and didn’t provide both sides of the topic. Even though we were instructed to take a side from the beginning, I still should have included both sides of the argument since the topic orders us to “Discuss”.
The process was much easier than the previous ones, especially the step where I had to gather information and use it, since we already had an opportunity to do so in the discussions. I believe that I really got used to the Big 6 model and have no more problems dealing with it. But, I still think that I should put more effort in the synthesis step and the drafting stage to make a good final product.
My work for augmentative essay was done successfully. I did everything in terms of what the introduction has asked me to do. Since we had an extension, I was able to work more in this written work. I could fix a lot of mistakes by having lots of time and I could get many peer editing done. However, since the topic was to general and wide that I had some difficulty organizing my idea. A lot of ideas could have been repeated in my essay which is something that I didnt do so well. If I had more time working on this I think I could have better ideas and have better essay written. By working on this essay I have found out how much it affects the media industries just because of Internet Piracy. From now on I decided to pay to download items that I want. Also I agree with internet Piracy because there are lots of poor people who want to get items free. I will find out way which is good for poor people and also good for media industry.
This essay was a bit challenging for me. I had some difficulties collecting the ideas. I thought the topic was too hard because I didn’t know what to write. I had no idea what to write. The other reason was I didn’t know much about the Internet Piracy. I think I should have been more aware about the topic, and this would have helped.
When I started writing the essay, I struggled a bit, but later, I had a good structure. Each of the body paragraphs had different examples supporting my argument. And I liked my conclusion. It had few solutions and I strongly expressed my thinking about the internet piracy.
If I have one more chance to write another argumentative essay, I will research more about the topic to get more ideas about the topic. I think it is very important to be fully aware of the topic to write a good argumentative essay.
I have just finished the task of writing an argumentative essay today. It important to reflect what I have leant by doing the task so that I can write my next task better. The task asked us to discuss whether I agree with downloading music and movies or not. I took one side of the argument and the whole essay was tightly written to support my thesis. I didn’t know that we had to take one side of a argument until I tried to write this argumentative essay. I find it’s much more easy to take a side than trying to discuss both sides of an issue.
I stated that I agree with the downloading of music and movies in the opening paragraph and using detailed explanation and examples to support my point. Big six model is also used and it really helped me to work on this task efficiently. This type of task which involves lots of researching is usually time-consuming because there is tons of information that we can find about the relative topic. The big six model helps me to save time and work efficiently.
However, this essay was not perfectly written, because of the break and exam weeks, the peer editing process was compressed to one class time which is not very enough for classmates to have close look at my essay. So my final essay wasn’t edited a lot from my first draft. There might be mistakes that I wasn’t aware of in the final copy.
Evaluation: The Argumentative Essay
I think I have finished writing my argumentative essay within the class time really successfully. In my opinion, the most helpful tool or technique that helped me a lot while I was writing this movie review would be ‘The Big Six Model’. Even though it is not the first time for me to write an argumentative essay, however I still found that the ‘The Big Six Model’ was really useful. It not only increases my efficiency of my writing and the convulsion of the essay itself, but also improved my essay writing techniques as well.
At the beginning of the task, even though I know what I have to write through the information that I gathered during the score discussion, and how to write an argumentative essay, however since I know a lot about the topic ‘internet piracy’, I could decide what I really want to talk about. However, through the ‘The Big Six Model’, I narrowed down my ideas or combined them together. I felt that the ‘The Big Six Model’ is really useful and helpful because it helped me a lot with narrowing my ideas.
Through this task, I think I have been actually taught not only the importance of using ‘The Big Six Model’ once again, but also know how to write an effective and impressive argumentative essay as well. I also realized that compared with the tasks that I did before, now, especially in this task, I’m able to use ‘The Big Six Model’ more smoothly and easily. In my opinion, ‘The Big Six Model’ will not only be really useful this time, but it will also be really helpful for me when I’m writing any essays for my core subject or an essay in the exam or even after I get in to colleges as well. I think ‘The Big Six Model’ was a really easy and helpful tool or technique for me in order to write a good and impressive essay in the future. I will use ‘The Big Six Model’ whenever I have to write an essay because I think it’s really helpful and useful for me and for my future development.
All in all, I think ‘The Big Six Model’ was a really helpful and useful technique to write a good and impressive essay. I’m really glad and proud of that I could be able to master ‘The Big Six Model’ so quickly and to be able to use it really smoothly. I would like to use this technique as a tool not only in this class, but also in my other core subjects as well in order to help my future development. I’m really glad that I could be able to have a chance to learn and master this helpful and useful technique.
6. Evaluation
This task was writing an argumentative essay on illegal downloading. First of all, I began the task with the first step of Big6 model which was ‘Task definition.’ I defined the task and considered whether I agree or disagree with the statement. Then, I drew brainstorming about the issues that I can discuss and information that will support my opinions. After I defined the task clearly, I was able to move on second step which was ‘Information seeking strategies.’ I drew another brainstorming and listed down all the possible sources for my research. In my case, internet was the best source for gathering information. Then, the third and fourth steps were ‘Location and Access’ and ‘Use of Information.’ During these steps, I was researching the information from the internet and I copied down all the articles that I got. Then I highlighted some important parts of the articles. Finally, after I got all the information that I needed, I could start organize them into outline. I wrote a detailed outline for the essay then I was able to write first draft easily. After completing the first draft, my classmates peer edited my essay. Through looking at their comments, I was able to find my mistakes. Lastly I finalized my final draft and cited the works that I used.
I was given several chances of writing argumentative essay before but it was simply asked to write my opinions. But this time, I had to support my opinions with researched information. Actually, it was a very interesting task to do and it made me to think deeply about the statement. Illegal downloading is such a big issue now but people don’t care about them anymore. They are just used to get pirated products. Even though I sometimes have pirated music and movies, I think that there should be more strict rules to prevent the loss of the entertainment industry.
For this task, Big6 model was very useful and helpful as it always does. Through brainstorming, I was able to get more ideas. Also, when I did researching, it was easier and faster since I completed the brainstorming. Every stage helped me to organize my information. For further tasks, I look forward using Big6 model and as I use it, I take shorter time and feel that it is very useful.
The topic we have this time, which is about the the validity of internet piracy, is quite difficult to write about. Even though this topic is strongly related to our daily life, we still lack enough information and details about it. Whether we support or are against internet piracy, I think it wasn’t easy to find the data which can be the reference of our opinions.
Even if I did find any useful data, it usually appeared in the review by others about internet piracy, and while I was recording that information, I found out myself was easily be influenced by the opinions of the author who used the data in the first place.
Anyway, I don’t think that I did as well as I did in the previous projects, there are lots of things which I could improve. For examples, I should add more of my personal opinion instead of the opinions on the internet. I should also make a better use of the information I learned during the scored discussion. It was quite a long period of time between the scored discussion and when I was writing this project, so I couldn’t remember a lot of details during the discussion.
Also, since that the time we had to work on this project was very close to our mock exams, most of my attentions were attracted to the exams, and therefore it was difficult for me to concentrate on this project. I hope that if there is a moment in the future when an exam is close to the due data of a major project, the project should have more extension, so we can easily put our attention form the exam back to our project.
In this task, topic was about internet piracy. For most of people do not know what internet piracy is. However, I was aware of what internet piracy is and its impact. I chose internet piracy has to be stopped because benefits are slanted on one side.
I would like to judge this product as ‘excellent’. It is because I knew the subject ‘internet piracy’ due to its problems in Korea. It has been an issue in Korea because of music piracy. I also heard from the news long time ago about the effect of internet piracy. These things helped me to finish the product with best quality. I liked this topic because I already know how to structure it when I got this task. So, I hope there are more topics that I know for the next time.
Now, I am doing fine with the steps of BIG 6. As usual, the easiest part was to outline for the argumentative essay. It is because as I mentioned above, I already knew how to organize the paragraph and knew what to write. However, the hardest part was to brainstorm. Since, I watched the news about the internet piracy; it was hard for me to remember those details. So, I thought over the break. I learned that I became more comfortable using BIG 6, compared to the last time. It takes me less and less time to complete the BIG 6.
In this task, I wrote an argumentative essay about Internet piracy. Argumentative essay is a type of essay that states my own opinion and support details to convince readers. My opinion is ‘disagree with Internet Piracy.’
Before writing argumentative essay, I wrote the evidence of portfolio using Big 6 model again. First, I drew two kinds of brainstorms. One is a brainstorm for agreement with Internet Piracy and second one is disagreement with Internet Piracy. Then, I chose disagreement, and drew one for mind map for information seeking strategy. Second, I find some information of Internet Piracy such as the definition of Internet Piracy, articles of illegal downloading and people’s opinion by using websites like google, CNN, BBC, etc. After that, I highlighted some important information. Third, I wrote outline form for my first draft. My first draft consists of 5 paragraphs. Fourth, I did peer editing with Soyoon, Jeong Eun and Risil. After peer editing, I wrote the final copy of disagreement of Internet Piracy.
This task was helpful for me to write my opinion. In several classes, I have to state my opinion often, so this task helps me how to write an argumentative essay. For example, in business class, we have to write whether a business should choose project A or not. By writing an argumentative essay and using Big 6 model, it will be easy to argue my opinion. Therefore, this assessment was very useful.
I think my final report on this topic has been done well. I took the side of being against the illegal downloading of music and movies from the internet. I could think of many points for each section, from a firm’s point, legal point and even from the point of people who download from illegal website. I think it was good that I could state some evidence from points of people download illegally. However, I should have included another side of point of view since the topic was to discuss.
If I have another chance to write an argumentative essay, I would search more about the legal parts and provide stronger evidence. I would also add some information from the other side’s point of view to make my essay more neutral and fair.
I think I am already comfortable with doing the Big Six Steps since this is the fifth time to use this. It is getting easier to deal with it that I am able to write the essay earlier than before. Since I can do the Big Six Steps faster, I can and should use this technique in other core classes to develop in the future.
Evaluation
In this essay I wrote an argumentative essay about Internet piracy. When I was working on this paper, I used the big 6 skills to search and evaluate the data and thought properly. Before we were working on this paper, we had a score discussion about internet piracy. I actually didn’t know what internet piracy means when I just started this project. Doing scored discussion helped me to understand the topic and gave me a lot of information. By researching the topic I got two sides of thinking of this and I realized that internet piracy is really big issue in entire world and we need to fix this problem. When I just started this project, I don’t know where to start and what to write on the paper but the big 6 steps were helpful and useful to finish my paper well. Since I realized that doing internet piracy is wrong and bad for everyone, I will also try to stop doing internet piracy. As I said on my paper, the reason why I do that because I can get free movie and music from the internet but I need to stop doing that so that it can also be good for movie and music industries. I hope the number of people who are doing internet piracy will decrease.
This task was a bit hard because it was about argumentative essay. It was the first time for me to write an argumentative essay.
Again, I did not have a hard time using the ‘Big 6’ this time because I’ve been using this method a lot this year. Also, using ‘Big 6’ was much faster. This time the task was a bit hard because we had IB mock exam while we were working on this assignment. I was a bit distracted but i could focus on it after the exam.

From your reflection, I asume you have done a great job on your argumentative essay. And I agree with your opinion about the Big 6 Model; it is a very useful technique or a tool for writing essays and commentaries.
However, I am curious about which side you took on this topic, since I want to know how others think about illegal downloading. My opinion for this was an absolute disagreement. I think that these acts should no longer be viewed as an illegal thing. I believe that it is a new ‘culture’, and those who are stubborn and ‘old-fashioned’ should start shifting and adapting their minds into the new world. They should realize that time passes by everyday, every second.

Actually i really don’t agree with your statement which said about “For most of people do not know internet piracy.” Because Internet Piracy is widespread and almost everyone is downloading free stuffs from the internet. So it is hard to believe that most of the people don’t know about the issue.

I agree with you that we lack of knowledge about internet piracy ourselves but I don’t think it would be difficult to find useful and non-biased information. Next time you should try to use the Big 6 research model that we have learned before and I am sure you will find it’s easier to get information from the internet. I agree with your thoughts about the argumentative essay because it was also my first time to write an argumentative essay. Also, I did not have hard time using ‘BIG 6’ as I used every time when I have writing proficiency task. Lastly, IB mock exam really disturbed juniors and seniors. I thought I would make the best task if he extended the due date because for juniors in the class had some disadvantages of doing the work.

I also agree with her that it was hard. I fotgot to mention about Big six step, but she mentioned it. She wrote about the process show she wrote it. I didn’t take the IB exam, i really think it would be hard to have a test and a project. I think her reflection is a bit short, but the content is okay. I agree with that Internet Piracy should be stopped. I also wrote an argumentative essay about disagreement of illegal downloading. Like you said, this task was very helpful because we could use our big 6 model again. However, unlike you know about Internet Piracy a lot, I didn’t know much about it. I only know music downloading in Korea like you, but I didn’t know the other things that are downloaded. Not only music downloading, Movie downloading is also popular in Korea. After I researched some of point of views from other people and some articles, I noticed that Internet Piracy should be stopped.
Like you said, it was easy to use big 6 model since we have practiced a lot. Therefore, this task helps us to remind how to use big 6 model so that we can use it in other classes.

I really agree with your reflection. I also didn’t know that I should take only one side of the topic for this argumentative essay. Unlike your opinion I disagree with doing internet piracy. For me also, I didn’t know what to write on the paper because it was my first time to write the argumentative essay, but whenever I had hard time to work on this project, the big six model helped me to finish my paper well and it made me to work on this lesser time. I believe that internet piracy isn’t just an issue in Korea; the damages it brings are actually spread around the world. I like the part about how you describe that the commonness of internet piracy helps you to write the essay. It is interesting to see that if the topic we have is closer to our daily life or serious enough that most people are aware of it, we usually have more things to write about. I do agree that the research we have done in this project is not as much as in the other projects, but I think the research is more difficult since most companies do not reveal the drop in the sales of their products, and without those data, I find it quite difficult to support my argument.
